University of Pittsburgh Medical Center: UPMC Lifestyle Medicine Program

Affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, UPMC offers eight family medicine residency programs across Pennsylvania with an available Lifestyle Medicine (LM) track. Additionally, thirty-two internal medicine residents at UPMC Pinnacle have mandatory LM curriculum, and in 2023 Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation joined ranks and added LM curriculum. Implementing the Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum created an ideal opportunity to design and launch the UPMC Lifestyle Medicine Program, directed by Dr. Michelle Thompson, DO, AOBFP, ABOIM, DipABLM, FACLM. This fully virtual medical specialty provides LM board-certified physicians, advanced practice providers (PA-C, NP), dietitians, pharmacists, health coaches, medical students, and residents, a platform to practice and integrate care in department including our flagship service, group medical visits.
The UPMC Lifestyle Medicine Program offers a variety of interventions including, but not limited to, the following:
- LM individualized assessments
- Group medical visits
- Weight management
- Mind-body skills groups for stress management
- Lifestyle Medicine foundations
- Maintenance groups for grad uates of a medical visit series
- Medical nutrition therapy
- Dietitian services
- Individual and group dietitian visits
- Future services
- Health coaching, individual and group
- Group medicial visit topics for menopause, sleep, exercise as medicine
