The President’s Report from Dexter Shurney

The Potential of Lifestyle Medicine

By ACLM President Dexter Shurney, MD, MBA, MPH, FACLM

In recent years, Lifestyle Medicine (LM) has become an area of increasing interest to the healthcare community.
The interest is rightly justified when one looks at the body of evidence on the widespread beneficial health and clinical outcomes that attend an LM approach to care. Addressing a broad range of illnesses at the root-cause, LM forms the foundation of effective healthcare.

Nevertheless, despite the evidence, LM still faces some challenges to realize its full potential and rightful position in the house of medicine and as the starting standard of care for most non-communicable chronic health conditions.

With your help, my goal as your incoming ACLM President is to put into motion a plan that will change the conversation and that will ultimately increase the adoption and implementation of LM.

Briefly, the strategies and tactics we will look to pursue, the four P's:

  1. Policies- that encourage and promote LM based on the power of the clinical evidence;
  2. Partnerships - aligning with the right organizations and influencers to help make the case and the necessary introductions
  3. Public Relations (PR) - spreading the word beyond our typical audience of practitioners, but also to health plans, employers, consumers/patients, government entities and even legislators.
  4. Payment - redefining value-based care to pay LM practitioners appropriately.

I look forward to interacting and working with you to accomplish our goals for ACLM and for Lifestyle Medicine.
