Description 
With physician and health professional burn out rising to epidemic levels, Lifestyle Medicine is an essential antidote to treat and preserve physical and mental health and boost resilience for ourselves and our colleagues. This panel discussion will provide an overview of the state of burn out among health professionals and focus on solutions that harness healthy lifestyles, emotional well-being supports, and strategies for leading and modeling well-being in the health care workplace. Medical practitioners’ personal experience with these behaviors can, not only improve self-care, but can also spur engagement in the practice of Lifestyle Medicine to secure improved patient outcomes. Healthy lifestyle approaches, enhanced with positive psychology-based habits, are feasible for busy practitioners, even during challenging times, and in fact, are elements of the framework necessary to ensure the future survival and growth of our professions.

Liana Lianov, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACLM, DipABLM – Founder and Principal, HealthType LLC 

Liana Lianov, MD, MPH, FACLM, FACPM, DipABLM As an innovative leader in lifestyle medicine, Dr. Lianov has advanced the movement in the US and internationally, including facilitating the panel that developed the lifestyle medicine core competencies and publishing its recommendations. She currently serves as the Chair of the Happiness Science and Positive Health Committee of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), vice-chair of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, and President of the Positive Health and Wellness Division of the International Positive Psychology Association. A few of her notable past positions include serving as president of the ACLM, Director for the Healthy Lifestyles Division of the American Medical Association and board regent for the American College of Preventive Medicine. She also directed programs in heart disease, stroke and cancer prevention at the California Department of Health Services. In 2018, she convened the inaugural Summit on Happiness Science in Health Care, which led to scholarly publications and a groundbreaking book on how to integrate happiness science into medical practice, Roots of Positive Change, Optimizing Health Care with Positive Psychology. 

Kaylan A. Baban, MD, MPH, DipABLM – Chief Wellness Officer, Director of Lifestyle Medicine Program, Assistant Professor of Medicine, George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences 

Kaylan A. Baban, MD, MPH is Chief Wellness Officer and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Director of the Lifestyle Medicine program at the GW Medical Faculty Associates. She is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine with a focus on holistic care and patient empowerment. Dr. Baban earned her bachelor’s degree from Columbia University as an I. I. Rabi Science Scholar. She received her MD and MPH from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as a George James Epidemiology awardee with Distinction in Research. She completed residency and a chief year in Preventive Medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as a Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society inductee, Harvard Macy Future Academic Clinician Educator, and Mount Sinai Beth Israel Integrative Medicine interdisciplinary fellow. As a clinician and educator, Dr. Baban believes that a holistic approach personalized to the individual is the key to success, and she enjoys working with her patients and students to find the path right for them. Dr. Baban’s clinical and curricular efforts address mindful provision of holistic, evidence-based healthcare for prevention, patient empowerment, and optimized health outcomes. Her clinical practice focuses on lifestyle-based prevention, management, and reversal of chronic health conditions, and empowering patients to improve their baselines in managing inflammatory conditions, cancer survivorship, and dysautonomias. Dr. Baban is an active member of both the American College of Preventive Medicine and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, serving as core faculty for the colleges’ joint Lifestyle Medicine Core Curriculum, and serving as an advisor and core faculty for the ACLM Physician and Health Care Provider Well-Being course.

Darshan H. Mehta, MD, MPH – Medical Director, Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine - Massachusetts General Hospital 

Dr. Mehta is Medical Director and Director of Medical Education for the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (BHI-MGH) and Director of Education at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (OCIM). Dr. Mehta received his BA in Biology from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MD from University of Texas-Southwestern Medical School. He completed his residency in internal medicine at University of Illinois-Chicago Hospital. In 2008, he completed a clinical research fellowship in complementary and integrative medicine at the Harvard Medical School Osher Research Center, during which he received a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. His educational and research interests include curricular development in complementary and integrative medical therapies, mind/body and resiliency educational interventions in health professions training, and promotion of professionalism in medical trainees. He directs medical student and resident rotational electives at BHI-MGH and OCIM. Dr. Mehta sees patients at both locations in a consultative role for use of complementary and integrative medical therapies, as well as mind/body interventions for stress management and stress reduction. He is active in the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health, and is a member of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Mehta is board-certified through the American Board of Integrative Medicine and has completed professional training in mindfulness-based stress reduction at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Most recently, he assumed the role as Interim Director for the Office for Well-Being at MGH.

Jacqueline E. Huntly, MD, MPH – Founder and President, Athasmed, LLC (Thrive To Lead MD) 

Jacqueline Huntly MD is President and Founder of Athasmed, LLC, also known as Thrive to Lead MD. As a Physician Development coach, she helps physicians design careers where they feel they can thrive both personally and professionally. She focuses on the development of skills and strategies that promote wellbeing; support fulfillment of career goals and aspirations; and foster self-leadership growth. Prior to coaching full-time, she was on faculty in the Family Medicine Department, Memorial University Medical Center, Savannah, Georgia, where she concentrated on teaching Lifestyle and Preventive Medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Birmingham Medical School, Birmingham, England. She completed residency training at UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill and Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta. She received her Masters in Public Health (in Epidemiology) from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Chapel Hill. She is board certified in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine. She did her coach training with the Co-Active Training Institute and the Physician Coaching Institute, and is certified as a Physician Development Coach through the Physician Coaching Institute.
