Data shows that 80% of diseases are preventable through healthier lifestyle choices. As we shift to value-based care, it’s essential that we shift away from “disease management” toward true “health” care that focuses on lifestyle change, using nutrition and exercise to improve patients’ health.

The field of Lifestyle Medicine encompasses a team approach—counseling patients and empowering them to integrate more healthful lifestyle choices into their daily lives, moving away from expensive and often unnecessary medications.

Brad Biskup, PA-C

Throughout high school and college, I was competitive in athletics, which led me to focusing on exercise physiology as a major for my undergraduate degree as well as a master's, however, instead of focusing on the sports medicine part of exercise physiology, I was drawn to the use of exercise as medicine in a non- competitive manner. Luckily, I had the opportunity to work as a research assistant with osteoporosis and exercise studies, as well as cardiac rehab, before focusing on becoming a physician assistant. After starting in cardiology as a physician assistant, I found that my background as an exercise physiologist, as well as in nutrition, have significantly helped with primary and secondary prevention through lifestyle medicine, and subsequently the Lifestyle Modification Clinic (LMC) was launched in 2010. The LMC, which also includes a lecture series, has doubled in size each year and currently I see approximately 40-50 patients per week with the sole focus on Lifestyle Medicine. Sarah Keyes, MS, PA-C

All of my life, I have wanted to help others; that is what motivated me to become a PA. After graduating from the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) PA Program, I started to practice in family medicine because I felt passionate about helping patients with the most chronic and debilitating diseases seen in the United States. But, after just four years in practice, I started to feel that I was not truly aligned with my passion for helping patients achieve health and wellness. I thought I might be able to help the PA profession and touch more patients by educating future PAs. I accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in the BCM PA Program and learned quickly of Lifestyle Medicine; a discipline that felt like the perfect fit for truly providing students, patients, communities and the world with the answer to the chronic disease problem. Now, my passion is to provide comprehensive preventive and lifestyle medicine focused care to patients through my practice, but also to provide future health care practitioners with the knowledge and skills they will need to aid patients in realistic, evidence-based and sustainable changes toward health empowerment. Lilly Tryon, DNP, FNP-BC

I can trace my Interest for lifestyle medicine back to when I was twelve and announced to my family that I would no longer eat meat. Since then, my growing desire to live well personally has influenced how I practice nursing. With the mounting evidence for lifestyle medicine to prevent, treat, and reverse chronic disease, I believe that to not have the conversation with my patients and students about the link between their lifestyle and their health is the equivalent of committing malpractice. But beyond simply providing health information or prescribing solutions, I am passionate about using a coaching approach to inspire hope, encourage personal responsibility, increase motivation and confidence for lifestyle change, and empower them to live well, too. I first became a registered nurse and later a nurse practitioner with the primary goal of helping people live the healthiest lives possible.  For most of my nursing career, I’ve worked with patients who have chronic diseases.  Over time, I began to realize just how powerful lifestyle medicine is to prevent, halt, and reverse chronic diseases.  Truly the evidence shows that there is nothing safer and more effective than lifestyle medicine!  I am honored to be able to volunteer for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and to offer evidence-based interventions to my patients that truly can add quality years to people’s lives.  Please feel free to reach me at

I’ve always had a passion for how food affects the mind and body. I’ve
seen how drastic change at best only benefits the short term. It's the
incorporation of smaller, significant, steps that lead to sustainable
lifestyle change. I’m a dietitian who has been in practice for over 20
years.  My passion is to help people use nutrition to prevent and manage
chronic conditions while maintaining a quality of life.  I teach my
clients to develop realistic, attainable behavior and lifestyle changes. I
believe anyone can reap the benefits of good nutrition no matter where the
